At least 5 lakh ‘Miyas’ names to be dropped in Assam voter roll
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that once the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is implemented in the state, around five lakh names identified as “Miyas” will be removed from the voter list.At present, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is carrying out a Special Revision (SR) exercise, which differs from the more detailed SIR process being conducted in some other states. The current SR mainly focuses on adding eligible voters, and existing names remain on the rolls unless objections are formally raised.According to Sarma, the SR is only an initial step, and stricter scrutiny will follow under the SIR. He said that individuals considered suspicious should not be allowed to vote and claimed that once SIR begins, four to five lakh names will be deleted. Responding to criticism from the Congress, he remarked that such actions are necessary to prevent what he described as unchecked settlement in areas like Duliajan.
