Morigaon hosts traditional buffalo fights in defiance of Supreme Court ban

Despite a Supreme Court ban, traditional buffalo fights (Moh Juj) were held on Thursday in parts of Morigaon district in central Assam during the Magh Bihu celebrations. According to local media reports, the events took place in Baidyabori and Ahatguri, drawing participation from nearby residents. Officials declined to comment, saying the matter is under consideration. In Baidyabori, more than 40 pairs of buffaloes were brought in for the fights, with some bouts lasting over 20 minutes. In Ahatguri, 33 pairs of buffaloes took part, attracting large crowds of spectators. The traditional event is associated with the harvest festival of Magh Bihu. In 2023, the Assam government had issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) allowing buffalo and bulbul bird fights during Magh Bihu. However, the Gauhati High Court struck it down in December 2024, citing violations of a 2014 Supreme Court ruling.
