Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos for the first time, a move seen as an important step in enhancing the state’s global presence and drawing foreign investment.Addressing the media, Sarma said Assam has been given the chance to represent India at the renowned international forum for the first time. He noted that traditionally, states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan have represented the country at Davos. The Chief Minister said he will depart for Davos on January 19 for a four-day visit, during which he will participate alongside global leaders and economists to showcase Assam on the world stage. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended a significant opportunity to Assam by enabling its participation this year.At the high-profile gathering, Sarma is expected to highlight Assam’s investment prospects and interact with global business leaders, policymakers, and multinational firms. His visit aims to project Assam as a rising economic hub in the Northeast and strengthen its engagement with international investors.The Chief Minister is also likely to meet representatives from multinational corporations and industry leaders to present the state’s policy initiatives, infrastructure growth, and sector-specific opportunities, especially in areas such as manufacturing, energy, logistics, agriculture, and tourism. In recent years, the Assam government has prioritised improving ease of doing business, expanding connectivity, and promoting the state as a gateway to Southeast Asia.In addition, Sarma is expected to participate in panel discussions and bilateral meetings, where he will outline Assam’s development roadmap and long-term vision focused on inclusive and sustainable growth. His presence at Davos is part of a broader effort to attract investments and forge strategic partnerships to boost economic growth and job creation in the state.The World Economic Forum’s annual meeting brings together leaders from governments, businesses, civil society, and academia to discuss key economic and geopolitical issues, offering Assam a valuable platform to build investor confidence and enhance its global outreach.
